Australian medical researchers are taking the next steps to reduce the risk of stroke in patients undergoing major surgery, with a $1.8 million federal government investment.
University of Sydney researchers will use the funding to explore the development of atrial fibrillation following major surgery, and whether blood thinners can improve health outcomes and decrease the risk of stroke.
Health Minister Greg Hunt said the project has been funded by the coalition government’s Medical Research Future Fund.
“We continue to invest in Australia’s best and brightest researchers,” he said.
“Projects like this one have the opportunity to save and protect lives.”
The $20 billion MRFF is a long-term investment in Australian health and medical research.
The government invested a further $1.3 billion in the MRFF in the 2022/23 federal budget.
